A Moment Stolen From Battle

Screaming madly,
Rushing in—
Sea of bodies crushing
One against another—

Fathers will fall
On the field of battle,
Somebody’s husband,
Somebody’s brother—

Heat of the moment carries them along
As they scream the warrior’s song—
“Odin, I come to you this day
Clear the way, clear the way!”

Over the scene Eagles and Ravens fly
Raising up a raucous cry!
Harsh yet beautiful is their song.
Their cries ring clearly, both loud and long—

The wreckage grows as the battle ensues,
What once was living flesh,
Now lies as naught but discarded,
Useless shells—

The Valkyries have many from whom
To choose among—
The Einherjar will find boon companions
Once the fighting here is done.

Suddenly, the battle is over,
As suddenly as it was begun—
There are victors it’s true,
But when so many homes have lost loved ones
You cannot say any, truly, won.
