A Woman's Prayer

Drop spindle
Hands working
Thread spinning on the line
Warp weaving
Hearth warming
Nights passing into time

Oh Frigga, please Frigga
Tell me what you have seen
He’s faring
Off wandering
Will he return to me?

Keeper of keys
Have you wept on your knees
When your husband is gone
And he does not see?
I’m all alone
And I’m sore afraid
So I’m wanting to know
Will he return to me?

He said that
Iceland was
A place where we’d be free
We built our
Hall here and
Raised up our family.

Winter is long, ice is hard
And the snow is deep
He’s gone out
Hunting and
Hoping the wolves will sleep.

Silent in counsel
You see what falls and you
Are the wisest of us all.
Help me be strong
And order my hall
So that if the worst comes
I can control all.

Drop spindle
Hands working
Thread spinning on the line
Warp weaving
Hearth warming
Nights passing into time

Oh Frigga, please Frigga
Tell me what you have seen
He’s faring
Off wandering
Will he return to me?
