House Nisse

Nisse house-watcher sits on the old gray doorstone,
Nisse house-protector, Nisse silent-feet;
Howling black snow-night lies cold on the bone,
Over winter goblins he is Nisse lantern-of-heat.

Against demons of the sun he is Nisse watching-eye,
Against hungry night-crawlers, Nisse strong-arm;
Clever-Nisse catches crooked elves as they fly,
Nisse Shield-bearer against goblins of cunning charm.

He is Nisse house-gleamer strong in the night,
Against thin white elves he is Nisse glitter-face;
The house is clean with golden firelight,
The house is orderly, Things-in-their-place.

People are House-sweepers and Making-all-clean,
People are House-builders and Makers-of-bread;
Yellow-haired Nisse -- but he will not be seen,
House-Nisse guardian there, Nisse shining-head.
