Thor's Hammer

What is it, I wonder, that tweaks my ears to
the woods at night, to a cackle of twigs or a
whisper of leaves. clumps of cackling thicket
hide their bony limbs in the forest's depths,
casting Loki's shadow in camp fire light. If
imagination could speak it would tell lies that
lurkin the mind's wilds where phantoms creep
curious eyes salivate.
Hair stands startled
beside winter
chills when faces
appear in swirls
of smoke that rises
from flame. Fear
is courage's drug.
It intoxicates
spirits that only
sober up when
reality wakes
