The California Hills

The Gods never saw any of them in the forming,
But they knew they would come to exist, in all the
golden, rolling, curving slopes, red before dusk;
Loki knew they would be there after the icey snow -

Stolid, but not resisting nature's gentle push; plush,
These golden yellow hills conceal green in folds.
Orange poppies grow in these fields & flush up yellow.
Odin breathed life into things he never even dreamed of.

I wish I could be a part of this rolling, flowing,
Yellow, green and orange-gold with all of the color that comes up,
Down and around with life like salamanders, frogs, fish, insects, gophers,
Deer and coyotes. The Gods only could have known
What would come after, into these hills.
