The Gift

I remember well
that first gift made
with trembling hands
and perhaps too
reckless a mind
Odin...I called to
with no thought given
to what might occur
Fury I found
and dark madness
unsettled dreams
strife all around
war within
wolves howling
Echoing ravens
shield maidens soaring
fear and longing
eventually yielded
to firm steps made
along the path
wandered wide
for wisdom did I
In Mimir's well
I placed an eye
High One's quest
become mine too
from the tree I swung
within the fire I hung
no friends to bring me
horn nor bread
alone I pursued
the greatest of gifts
'til seeking became
the gift itself
