Valhalla’s Call

Unlooked test
Once hunted hard
In youthful pride

Death beckons
Hel calls
Raven’s hunger

Not mine the life
That will be spilled
Nor kinswoman

Family mine
I must support
I must not risk;

Thunder sounding
Warrior’s call
Burning blood

Heavy heart
One last time
To battle go

Not before me
Woman or child
Shall raven’s feast

Not while living
Will my eyes
Hold such a sight

Warrior first
A name I leave
Still unstained

Death embraced
Woden’s gift
One final dance

No thought of living
No thought of loss
One last victory

Valhalla’s hall
Peace of the mound
I care not which

The gift of life
For woman and child
My blood to buy

Brightest name
And empty bed
My wife I leave

Honour won
On bloodied field
Scant comfort children

Foemen felled
Ere breath my last
In laughing victory

Old man’s folly
Proud man’s wyrd
Honour’s price
